Implementation of Network Canvas within Partner Services

This project set out to reconfigure Network Canvas as a disease investigation tool for use within Partner Services and to pilot this version of the software within a single clinic site in order to demonstrate feasibility, acceptability, and gather preliminary evidence of efficacy.

Below you will find information about our partner site, our approach, and details on both our initial and final implementation.

To understand the outcomes of our pilot implementation, we will assess feasibility and acceptability via key informant interviews and surveys, and initial evidence of efficacy through anonymized Partner Services data using a pre/post analysis of data qualitypartners notified, and timeliness.

We are using the Active Implementation Frameworks (AIF) to guide our pilot implementation. AIF was chosen because of its comprehensiveness and becuase, unlike many other approaches, it heavily emphasizes the importance of the installation stage and the practical preparation necessary to ready a site to fully accommodate a new innovation. As detailed within our timeline, our project is following four stages: exploration, installation, initial implementation, and full implementation.

A pilot implementation posed a number of logistical challenges for our team and our partners. While direct integration with CHIMS/Maven (which would allow Network Canvas data to directly enter those systems) would have been the preferred solution, this was not possible within the scope of this initial project.

Our team devised the following workflow to assist DIS in transferring this highly sensitive and complex data from the Interviewer app, and into CHIMS/Maven.

Since automatic integration with CHIMS/Maven was not possible within the scope of this project, we instead developed a custom RShiny app to present Network Canvas data to DIS in a convenient format for copying into the system.

In collaboration with our partners at HBH, we developed an interview protocol within the Network Canvas Software for conducting Partner Services interviews in accordance with the approach taken by the program's DIS and the data required by the CHIMS reporting system.

Howard Brown Health coordinator, Justin Torres, created a comprehensive guide for utilizing the customized Interviewer App built by our team and the paired down interview protocol embedded within the app. This guide walks interviews through the process of downloading the app, installing the protocol, running the interview, and exporting the PDF table. Refer to the training guide below.

Data entry was a major challenge due to the complexities of software systems integration, so we created an rshiny data reader app designed to read data captured within the Network Canvas interview, and format it exactly as required by CHIMS/Maven. You can download this tool from GitHub.

Final Implementation

Final Implementation

While our original intent was to produce a Network Canvas protocol, mapped to required CHIMS data, that would allow DIS to complete the majority of a Partner Services interview within the tool, it became clear through feedback from our HBH partners that this did not afford the flexibility DIS were accustomed to in order to build client rapport and conversationally approach the interview. Further, the requirement of RShiny to read Network Canvas data into CHIMS added additional complexity to the DIS workflow.

In response, our team substantially pared down the Partner Services protocol to support the elicitation and management of partner data and developed a bespoke version of Network Canvas that would output a simple human-readable PDF table for DIS to leverage for easy triage and input into CHIMS.
